What is Organic Wine?
The U.S.
legal clarification is in order here. Many people use natural
wines and organic
wines interchangeably. However, the USDA defines
organic wine as wine that is made from
organically grown grapes and is made without any added
sulfites. Wine made from organically grown grapes isn't the
issue; it's the sulfites. Conventional wine makers are allowed
to add up to 350ppm of sulfites to help stabilize and preserve
their wines. Wines made from organically grown grapes however,
are limited to 100ppm. By adding "any" sulfites we are to say
"made from organically grown grapes", not organic
wine. FWO produces wines from certified organically
grown grapes with 30% to 60% fewer sulfites added than the
maximum 100ppm allowed. What's interesting is that, even if we
added the maximum allowable SO2 to our wine, it would be
99.99% organic wine - still can't call it organic
wine though.
From the farming perspective, our
organic wines (natural wines) are the
products of organic
wine viticulture, which practices all U.S. and European
requirements for organically grown products. The fundamental
idea behind organic is health - health of the soil, health of
the plant and the health of you and me. Therefore, in the
production of organic wines there are no
pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers used.
Everything is done nature's way - cultivating the soil and
planting cover crops instead of applying herbicides; using
natural fertilizers in stead of chemicals; employing natural
predators of insects in stead of applying pesticides. The
result is better tasting, healthier wine for you and me!
