Vegan Wines...What a Surprising Complement to any Vegan Food or Vegan Recipe!

Wait a minute you say - Are there such things as vegan wines? Absolutely, and there are many selections to pair with vegan foods, even to use as ingredients in a vegan recipe. But, if there are such things as vegan wines, what are the wines that aren't? The simple answer is non-vegan. Explanation is in order.

Fining is a process in wine making, which makes cloudy wine clear, and removes unwanted substances missed during filtration. A fining agent is what is poured into the wine, and as it passes from top to bottom, acts as a magnet attracting the unwanted particles to it. Once passing through the wine the "fining agent" is removed, theoretically leaving no traces of itself behind. Agents of animal origin are commonly used as "fining agents", ranging from egg whites, egg albumin, casein (milk protein) and gelatin (derived from animal bones) to chitin (obtained from lobster and crab shells) and isinglass (a fish by-product). Some people prefer to drink wine that has had no contact with animal matter whatsoever, with particular interest being expressed in vegan foods, vegan recipes and vegan wines with the advent of the mad cow disease scare in the UK.

Vegan wines are those that use fining agents made from other than animal by-products. Vegan wines only use organic, plant or mineral-based agents such as bentonite clay, carbon or diatomaceous earth (rock made from pulverized algae) as their fining agents.

Unfortunately, vegan wines are not always clearly labeled as such. Also, it should be noted that even though vegan wines may be available in some vintages, they are not necessarily produced as vegan in subsequent vintages of the same wines.

All of our vegan wines are listed under a Vegan Wines category for your convenience. We make it easy for you to determine which vegan wines are suitable for various vegan foods, or with a special vegan recipe. Please note that all of our vegan wines are 100% organic, providing you with the related organic wine benefits as well. Visit About Organic Wine to learn more.

May we invite you to enhance your next vegan food dish with one of our tantalizing organic vegan wines.
